Overall the retail industry saw a slight decrease in shopper traffic compared to 2016. Across various retailers customer traffic was down by 11.58%.

With people counters at thousands of locations, Flonomics is in an excellent position to compare store traffic over time, over region, and over industry. For the purposes of this report we have chosen three specific industries to compare, Apparel, Footwear, and Furniture. All three industries saw a decrease in traffic from the 2016 holiday. The furniture industry seeing the largest decline in shoppers with -20.13%, following behind was apparel at -7.59% and then footwear at -5.72%.

With record temperatures across the country, it may be that shoppers chose to go outside and take in the beautiful weather. With consumer confidence at an all time high, and revenue up across most of our clients, there’s more to this story. Flonomics data scientists have compiled holiday specific reports for some of our clients to include weather, revenue, store traffic and other data to tune sales and marketing programs.
